How to Use the DM Required Per Day Calculator
Welcome to the DM Required Per Day Calculator on AgriOps! This free tool helps you calculate your livestock’s daily Dry Matter (DM) intake and the fresh weight silage needed, ensuring efficient feed planning. Whether you’re managing cattle, sheep, or other livestock, this calculator simplifies the process. Follow these steps to get started and download a PDF summary of your results!
Step 1: Access the Calculator
You’re already on the right page! The DM Required Per Day Calculator is displayed below, featuring a clean, green-themed interface with the AgriFlow banner showcasing our farm management tools.
Step 2: Calculate Dry Matter (DM) Required Per Day
The first section helps you estimate the daily DM intake per head:
- Enter Average Weight of Livestock (Kg): Input the average weight of your animals (e.g., 650 kg for a mature cow).
- Set Avg Daily DM Intake (% of Body Weight): Enter the percentage of body weight your livestock consumes as DM daily (e.g., 3% is typical for cattle; the default is set to 3).
- View the Result: The Kg/DM Required Per Head Per Day field updates automatically. For example, a 650 kg cow with a 3% DM intake requires 19.50 kg of DM per day (650 × 0.03).
The result appears in a green-highlighted box for easy reading.
Step 3: Calculate Fresh Weight Silage Required
The second section calculates the fresh weight silage needed based on your DM requirements:
- Kg/DM Required Per Head Per Day: This field auto-populates from Step 2 (e.g., 19.50 kg).
- Enter Silage Dry Matter (DM%): Input the DM percentage of your silage (e.g., 25% for typical grass silage).
- View the Result: The Total Fresh Weight Required (Kg) field updates instantly. For example, 19.50 kg DM ÷ 0.25 (25%) = 78.00 kg of fresh silage per head per day.
Step 4: Download Your Summary as a PDF
Once you’ve calculated your results, save them for records or planning:
- Scroll to the Download Your DM Intake Summary section below the calculator.

Example Scenario
Suppose you manage a herd of 50 dairy cows, each weighing 600 kg on average, with a DM intake of 2.5% of body weight. Your silage has a 30% DM content:
- Step 1: Enter 600 in Average Weight and 2.5 in Daily DM Intake. The calculator shows 15.00 kg DM per head per day (600 × 0.025).
- Step 2: Enter 30 in Silage DM%. The calculator shows 50.00 kg fresh silage per head per day (15.00 ÷ 0.30).
- Step 3: Multiply by 50 cows to plan for your herd (e.g., 50 × 50.00 = 2,500 kg fresh silage daily).
- Step 4: Download the PDF to keep a record.
