Meal Mix Calculator
Formulate custom rations using standard or manual feeds. Instantly calculate weighted average DM, ME, CP, NDF, Starch, Sugar and cost per tonne.
Mix Summary
Weighted Average Nutrient Analysis (as fed)
How It Works
Add each ingredient, enter a quantity in kg and an optional cost per tonne. The calculator immediately shows each ingredient's share of the mix, then computes the weighted average nutrient profile — DM, ME, CP, NDF, Starch and Sugar — across all ingredients. Cost per kg and cost per tonne update in real time as you adjust quantities.
Use Standard Feed to pick from the built-in feedstuff database with pre-loaded UK average values, or Manual Entry to enter your own lab analysis or bespoke values. Hit PDF to save a printable report of your ration.
Typical UK Ration Targets
| Livestock | ME (MJ/kg DM) | CP (%) | NDF (%) | DM (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dairy cows (TMR) | 11.5–12.5 | 16–18 | 30–35 | 35–45 |
| Beef finishing | 12.0–13.0 | 14–16 | 20–28 | 40–55 |
| Beef stores / growing | 10.5–11.5 | 13–15 | 30–38 | 35–50 |
| Suckler cows (mid-gestation) | 9.5–10.5 | 10–12 | 38–45 | 30–45 |
| Ewes (late pregnancy) | 11.0–12.0 | 14–16 | 28–35 | 35–50 |
Targets are indicative. Requirements vary by breed, stage of production, live weight and performance level. Always seek sign-off from a registered nutritionist before finalising a ration.
Why NDF Matters
Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) drives rumen fill and limits dry matter intake. Ruminants need a minimum effective NDF level — typically ≥28–32% of DM — to maintain rumen health and avoid acidosis. High-starch finishing rations intentionally push NDF lower, but must be introduced gradually with an appropriate buffer.
