How to Formulate a Livestock Meal Mix & Calculate True Costs

Home-mixing can cut feed costs by £30–£80 per tonne compared to buying compound feed — but only if the ration is nutritionally balanced and you know your real cost per tonne.

The Three Pillars of Ration Formulation

Energy (ME)

Measured in MJ/kg DM. Drives milk production and liveweight gain. Target 11.5–12.5 for high-yielding dairy cows.

Protein (CP)

Essential for milk solids and growth. 16–18% for dairy, 14–16% for finishing cattle.

Fibre (NDF)

Maintains rumen health. Minimum 28–35% depending on production stage to prevent acidosis.

How to Calculate True Cost per Tonne

Cost per tonne = Σ (Inclusion Rate % × Ingredient Cost per tonne) / 100

Don’t forget “hidden” costs: milling electricity, labour, mineral/vitamin premix (usually 1–2%), and transport. Our calculator automatically handles weighted averages.

Practical Formulation Tips

The 1–2% Rule

Always include 1–2% high-quality mineral/vitamin premix. Deficiencies here can cancel out the benefits of a good energy/protein balance.

Introduce Changes Gradually

Sudden ration changes can cause digestive upsets. Transition over 7–14 days.

Moisture Matters

Test home-grown grain for moisture. Wet grain dramatically reduces energy density.

NDF is Non-Negotiable

Keep effective NDF above 28–32% in most rations to maintain rumen health.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I save by home mixing?

Most farms save £30–£80 per tonne compared to buying compound feed, depending on scale and ingredient prices.

What is a good target cost per tonne?

In 2026, a well-balanced dairy TMR typically lands between £220–£280 per tonne depending on performance level and raw material costs.

Should I get my own feed analysed?

Yes — especially home-grown cereals and forages. Lab analysis every 4–6 weeks during the feeding season is recommended.
