Netwrap — Bales Per Roll by Length and Width
Based on a standard 1.2m diameter round bale. Larger 1.5m bales use approximately 25% more netwrap per bale — reduce these figures accordingly. Always check your baler manual for the correct roll width before ordering.
| Roll Length | Width | Bales at 2 layers | Bales at 3 layers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,500 m | 1.23 m | ~55–65 bales | ~37–43 bales |
| 1,500 m | 1.25 m | ~55–65 bales | ~37–43 bales |
| 3,000 m | 1.23 m | ~110–130 bales | ~73–87 bales |
| 3,000 m | 1.25 m | ~110–130 bales | ~73–87 bales |
| 3,300 m | 1.25 m | ~121–143 bales | ~81–95 bales |
| 3,300 m | 1.28 m | ~118–140 bales | ~79–93 bales |
Figures are approximate for 1.2m diameter bales. Actual bale count varies with bale diameter, baler overlap settings and roll quality. Use the Silage Net Wrap Calculator for your exact bale dimensions.

Silage Stretch Film — Bales Per Roll by Layer Count
Silage stretch film is the airtight layer that creates the fermentation environment. More layers mean better fermentation and fewer losses — the cost difference between 4 and 6 layers is small compared to the silage value protected.
| Roll Length | Width | 4 layers | 6 layers ✓ | 8 layers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 m | 500 mm | ~20–25 bales | ~13–17 bales | ~10–13 bales |
| 750 m | 500 mm | ~30–38 bales | ~20–25 bales | ~15–19 bales |
| 1,500 m | 500 mm | ~60–75 bales | ~40–50 bales | ~30–37 bales |
| 500 m | 750 mm | ~30–38 bales | ~20–25 bales | ~15–19 bales |
6 layers is the industry minimum recommendation. The ✓ column shows recommended standard.
How Many Layers of Silage Wrap Does a Bale Need?
Each layer of stretch film adds approximately 25 microns of barrier thickness. More layers mean a better oxygen barrier and significantly lower dry matter losses in storage. The cost of extra wrap is almost always less than the cost of the silage it protects.
4 layers — Absolute minimum
Ideal conditions only — bales stored for less than 3 months and used quickly after opening.
6 layers — Recommended
Standard recommendation for most UK farms. Good protection for storage up to 12 months.
8 layers — Best practice
Long-term storage beyond 12 months, or where bales will be stacked and handled multiple times.
10 layers — High risk sites
Exposed storage, history of bird damage, or premium forage crops where losses must be minimised.

Netwrap vs Silage Film Wrap — Which Is Better?
Both systems are widely used on UK farms. The honest answer is that film-only wrapping gives better fermentation, while netwrap gives better physical protection. Many producers combine both — netwrap for shape and structure, film wrap over the top for the airtight seal.
🕸️ Netwrap
Advantages
- ✓Faster baling — no wrapper needed
- ✓Better bale shape and structural integrity
- ✓Easier stacking and handling
- ✓Lower cost per bale for the binding step
- ✓Works in wetter conditions
Disadvantages
- ✗Not airtight — needs film wrap over top for silage
- ✗Netwrap recycling required — extra cost and hassle
- ✗Can trap moisture if film fails
🎞️ Film Wrap Only
Advantages
- ✓Better oxygen barrier = better fermentation
- ✓Lower DM losses in storage
- ✓No netwrap recycling required
- ✓Cleaner opening — no net to remove before feeding
Disadvantages
- ✗Slower — wrapper makes more passes per bale
- ✗Bale shape less rigid — harder to stack
- ✗More vulnerable to bird and vermin damage
- ✗Higher material cost per bale
The combined system — most popular on UK farms
Most UK round bale silage is netwrapped first for shape and stability, then film-wrapped with 6–8 layers over the top. This gives the physical handling benefits of netwrap with the fermentation quality of film. The main downside is netwrap plastic waste, which must be collected and taken to an agricultural plastics recycler.
Mini Round Bale Netwrap
Mini round balers (producing 0.5m–0.8m diameter bales) use narrower netwrap than standard balers. The most common mini round baler netwrap widths are 0.9m and 1.0m, though some models take 1.23m or 1.25m standard width.
⚠️ Always check your baler specification before ordering
Mini round baler netwrap width is the single most common ordering mistake. The roll must match the baler's stated width exactly. Using the wrong width causes poor bale formation and netwrap waste. Check the existing roll on the machine or your baler operator manual before purchasing.
0.9m netwrap
80–100 bales
per 1,500m roll
Small mini round balers
1.0m netwrap
70–85 bales
per 1,500m roll
Medium mini round balers
1.23m netwrap
55–65 bales
per 1,500m roll
Some mini baler models
Netwrap 1.25m × 3000m
Standard width netwrap for most UK round balers — 3,000m long roll for fewer changes.
Silage Stretch Film 500mm
Black 500mm stretch wrap film for round bales — 6 layers minimum recommended.
Netwrap 1.23m × 1500m
Shorter 1,500m roll — suits lower-volume users and mini round balers.
Silage Inoculant
Bacterial inoculant applied at baling — improves fermentation and reduces DM losses.
Wrap Film — 750mm Wide
Wider film means fewer passes per bale — faster wrapping for high-output operations.
Bale Wrap Dispenser / Cradle
Film roll holder and dispenser for manual wrapping of small bales and irregular shapes.
