Understanding Crop ROI

Return on investment for arable crops measures how much profit you generate relative to total growing costs. A positive ROI means the crop is profitable after all variable and overhead costs. For home-use crops such as wholecrop silage or home-grown cereals, the savings versus buying in can be equally important as the sale value.

Typical UK Cost Benchmarks (2026)

  • Winter wheat total costs: £600–£900/ha depending on input regime and land rent
  • Wholecrop silage production: £120–£180/tonne fresh weight
  • Break-even grain price for winter wheat at average UK yields: £140–£180/tonne
  • NAAC cultivation contract rates updated for 2025–26 season are used as guide values
