Bolt Torque Settings Calculator

Metric grade 8.8 · 10.9 · 12.9 — M5 to M30 — adjusts for lubrication condition

How to use: Select the bolt size, grade marked on the bolt head, and lubrication condition. The result is the recommended tightening torque with a ±10% working range. These are general engineering values — always use manufacturer torque figures for wheel nuts, engine bolts and other critical joints.

Recommended Torque

79 Nm

Working range: 7187 Nm (±10%)

Grade 8.8M12Lightly oiled (baseline)

Standard reference condition. Clean threads with a light coat of engine oil.

General engineering reference only. Do not use for wheel nuts, engine bolts, or any joint where a manufacturer torque figure exists.

Values for metric coarse thread, steel-to-steel, lightly oiled. Fine thread: add ~8%. Dry: add ~25%. Anti-seize: reduce by ~20%.

Lubrication Condition Guide

Dry / zinc-plated× 1.25

Dry threads have higher friction — more torque needed for same clamping force.

Lightly oiled (baseline)× 1.00

Standard reference condition. Clean threads with a light coat of engine oil.

Copper anti-seize / Copaslip× 0.80

Reduces friction significantly — use less torque than the dry/oiled figure.

Molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂)× 0.65

Very low friction. Under-torquing is a risk if dry values are used by mistake.
