Quick Tips

Tapping drill vs clearance

The tapping drill leaves material for the tap to cut threads into. The clearance drill passes a bolt through freely with no thread engagement. Use the tapping size for the threaded component, clearance for the clamped piece.

Metric formula

For any metric thread: tapping drill = nominal diameter − pitch. M10 × 1.5 → 10 − 1.5 = 8.5 mm. Works for both coarse and fine pitch. Use the custom pitch tab for non-standard threads.

BSP pipe threads

BSP sizes are nominal pipe bore designations — not actual dimensions. The formula does not apply. The 1/2" BSP has an actual OD of ~21 mm. Always use the table value, never calculate from the size name.

Drill square, start with taper tap

Use a drill press where possible — a square entry is critical. Always start with a taper tap. Back off half a turn for every full turn in steel to break the chip. Use cutting fluid in steel.
